David Abrams, in his book, Spell of the Sensuous,
writes of mystical vertigo upon stepping from his rice-paddy hut into the
night, the star-sea overhead mirrored in the silken paddy pools at his feet,
plunging him into an infinity of stars. Beachcombers stand spell-bound as curls
of bioluminescent surf lap their toes; moviegoers are swept into visual
awe by James Cameron’s movie epic, Avatar: the illuminant skin
spots of the Navi, their radiant local flora, casting an enchantment over
our senses.
We need points
of light, feral scents and wild sounds, along with nature's other untamed
graces to nurture our souls. Alongside vitamins, minerals and herbs--we need
memory “bottles” to tide us over when we are too long gone from
wildness--make sure to "stock" these on your shelf:
ª Starlight;
Bioluminescent Waves; Sunset
ª Driftwood Smoke; Sea
Brine; Scent of Snow
ª Ocean Surf; Seagull
Cries; Scuffed Sand
ª Coyote Yips; Vixen
Howls; Lynx Yowls
ª Raven Caws, Loon
Cries, Hawk Screeches
ª Rasp of Cargo Hasps;
Chink of Ship Rigging; Snapping Sails
To harvest the Grace and Power of our own Wildness,
We must provide for it: Communion With It's Own Kind
